Permitting in Alamance County depends on whether your lot is in an incorporated city, an unincorporated area, or one of the smaller towns served by the county. Here's what to expect — and how BKA keeps it moving.
For most of Alamance County, building permits and inspections go through the Alamance County Inspections Department at 1946 Martin St., Burlington (336-290-0404). The county handles permits for unincorporated areas and for the towns of Elon, Gibsonville (the Alamance County portion), Green Level, Haw River, Swepsonville, Ossipee, and the Village of Alamance under interlocal agreements. Applications can be submitted electronically to planreview@alamance-nc.com or in person at the Central Permitting office at 201 W. Elm St. in Graham.
The county's residential permit fee schedule (effective July 1, 2026) sets new single-family construction at $525 for homes up to 1,500 gross square feet, and $0.36 per square foot above 1,500 — with trade permits (electrical, plumbing, mechanical) included in that total. That's a straightforward, all-in fee structure compared to some neighboring counties that itemize each trade separately.
If your lot is inside Burlington city limits, the permitting process starts in the city's BurlingtonSmart portal rather than at the county. Graham and Mebane also have their own planning and zoning review processes before the county or city issues the building permit.
